In what way is this house "Green"? In colour? Don't get me wrong, it's a beautiful house and I'd love to live there, but what was the carbon? footprint involved in it's construction averaged over it's lifetime? How many people live there? How many people COULD live there? Could 2 people live in a much smaller space with much lower construction costs, but with equal energy efficiency?

I hate how people dare to say they are? "green" houses when they are on a 50 acre lot located in the woods. I am fairly confident that an apartment or multi-use development in a dense area of the city is a much more eco friendly build. Better use of land, and less need for a car. If everyone on earth lived on 50 acres, there would be no more land. The world's population can fit in the state of Texas if living at the density of New York New York.

Apologies, I think I misunderstood your statement. Now that you put a little more? explanation into it I see where you are coming from. If I had the money I would go for a material change on the wood, which would dramatically increase the cost. That said, if the wooden type burns down it would be easier to replace the house from a material perspective. Nothing lasts forever. Cheers!

I'm sure efficiency is a pretty big deal for your? winter heat. Have you researched rocket mass heaters? Googleing rocket stove pops up some good results on how to build one. If you're burning wood anyway, you might as well burn it effeciently. And the kicker, it releases no smoke, just CO2 and steam.

Sweet! I am happy about the trout, now no one can complain..haha. Have you considered heating the greenhouse floor with a rocket mass heater? I know your using hydroponics so it wouldn't be efficient for water temperature controls, however, Im sure? heated floors in the greenhouse would affect the average volume temp, pushing the possibility of undisturbed winter growing. From the looks of it, This method uses very little space and wood. about 1/4th I have heard.

Around $15K. If it was sub surface, there is extra cost with digging deeper for the heating/cooling system and it would also be down in? the water table. Plus the concrete would have to be reinforced more since there isn't an equal load on both sides. CT regulations require 42" plus footings for anything with a foundation. Entire thing will be automated. Using Geodesic for the "coolness" factor ;-) Plus they can be an open span without extra supports = less material costs.

Good luck to you. ? What an interesting project. I'd expect costs in the neighborhood of $20K? Do you have any estimates yet? Have you thought of constructing sub-surface so grow beds are roughly ground level to take advantage of earth insulation, etc? Hope you incorporate some custom monitoring and controls as you've done in your current GH. Is the 4' frost barrier a local regulation? Why geodesic vs latitude optimally sloped roof design type structure?

I missed this one... very well done. I think your earlier designs didn't get a fair trial.... I read that the strength of? the dome is in the foundation since all force is transferred there. As long as the foundation ring is in tact the dome should be good to go. If you would have added a ring foundation to your struts, I think that the hubs would not have failed but that last design is killer. Great job !

A very useful video but it occurred to me that you could use a broach to make a square hole in the upper tab before welding. I'm sure a square broach and an arbor press would be cheaper than a lathe, you wouldn't need to re-galvanize the bolt, and if the nut ever came loose you could tighten it from inside without having to rip off the glazing, which is the reason a carriage bolt has a square under the head in the? first place.

I came across your video on Instructables. Great Job. Something you may consider rather then the paint is to re-coat the parts with zinc after they are welded. You could start with plain steel parts then and not worry about hazards due to vapors. You could then paint the? galvanized metal. You can find the instructable on Instructables Again Great job. actually, a very good question! There's basically enough friction in the wood and (poor) alignment between the wood and the hubs that the bolts held in place. Once the heads started to grab into? the epoxy on the hubs, there was enough friction to tighten them. I think there were only 2 that spun and I just used some vice grips to hold the heads. ;-)

It was based on minimizing? the scraps from the polycarb panels since they are the most expensive component. These panels are 6' wide, so with a 3v, 32.5 foot dome, the maximum triangle size from tip to base was just shy of 6'. If you go up to a 4V, I'm sure you could do a much larger building!

I think the short term expense will be offset by the long term gain. When you are experimenting there is a need to be fearless for sure. Failure is always a step forward. A larger? dome would have been nice but then you would have possibly had to have used 2x6 instead of 2x4 and made your hubs beefier. We use a double hub system for 33' - 51'. Then again going to a 4V would have shortened your struts and increased the number of hubs & struts. Gain or loss? email me direct @ yogabill2 gmail

You're welcome to drop by any time! FYI: Even though the shed has a smaller foot print, it cost more and took longer to build than the dome! I should have either built a larger dome and gone up to a 4V, or did a second northern dome and covered it? like a shed. ;-)

for a 3V dome, it has 15 sides so I just averaged 360 degrees divided by 15, which is 24 degrees at each angle. If you look at each area, the angles will change? a bit but there's enough flex in the steel and wood where a degree plus or minus doesn't make a difference. I ignored all the thickness and based all the calculations on the outer "skin".

I use 14 vents in the kneewall for 360 degree low level intake including the door. To maximise the chimney effect use the entire top pentagon for the high level vent.? Reinforce the pentagon and the opening, hinge it on one side and use hydraulic rams to open it. Don`t forget to install safety chains in case it ever gets loose.

hi man, you totally inspired me to make i geo dome with aqua ponics. i watched your vids lots of times and other and did research. so now ive got my own 2v dome raised on 250mm stilts under base hubs, 4.3m dia.i got 100 silver perch fingerlings in ther and? a few others ( trout, cod muscles and 100 shrimp) and 5 commets. struts are losp (organicly treated pine) 105mm washers as hubs (2 per hub) and covered in builders plastic. triangular door. LED down lights and 12V dc backup pump. video soon

Holy shit. It's a 23 second video. When there is a flood or hurricane, judging by whatever variant of polyvinyl coating they sprayed onto the concrete which was applied to the stryofoam framework I'm guessing the domehome would remain while all other convential wooden frame houses would be gone with the with the wind,? or water. As for the fireplace, stove, and bathroom I'm going to take a wild guess and say those are on the inside of the home? This is just the shell. Understand?

Hello stitchimage - whatever material you have available must be made into a mix that has the right consistency. The simplest test you can do is to grab a hanfull of mix and squeeze it - you want it to retain it's shape when you release your grip and not be tto wet. This means you have to add water, cement, lime aggregate, clay or whatever other add-mix you need to achieve a "stable", workable filler. I've got no experience of using lava? cinder - try different mixes, experiment.

It's really easy to 1st fix all services once the dome is built. You can chase out channels for ductwork and fix back boxes for electrical fittings etc prior to plastering - same for all? the plumbing. I'll sort out and post a vid showing this sort of work and you can also check out Lisa & Paul Major's Ardometv on youtube for fixing electrical boxes.

Clay is good and provided that you work with care it will give you a sound water tight finish that will last a considerable time. Sand and cement render with an integral waterproofer in the final coat is ok is only appropriate when the bags have been filled with a lime or cement mix. We're building in the uk shortly and we'll be using a double coil construction with a waterproof membrane sandwiched between the? inner and outer coils. The outside will then be covered in soil/turf and be planted.

At a guess we used about 65k to build about 55 domes. The most recent Cal-earth newsletter has more on the number of metres of tube used in relation to dome dia. The only dome where I've tried to evaluate materials used worked out about 780m and 18m3 earth for a 3.2m dome with buttressing, raised beds and? serpentine seating.

Most rolls we buy are 500m long. Here we used a double layer of? 17" for the lower levels reduced in width incrementally as we came up changing to a single layer of 17" at about 3metres height and again reducing the width incrementally to the apex. The narrowest roll was 12". Generally the domes seem fine but there is an issue with condensation. The vents at the bottom have got mesh inside to prevent snakes/rodents getting in but I think they might possibly have got blocked up.

I'm not incredibly ignorant of US bands there have been a few here and there which pleases me (fleet foxes grizzly bear beirut to name a few) but still the UK has generally been more experimental and over all produced better artists in the last 30 years. Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, Metallica never had #1 singles but they are legends any way. Cultural impact and album sales mean far more than radio hits.

She clearly isn't as popular or loved by the public. Almost all the singles off BTW flopped and the album sold less than half of what TF/TFM did + it's already off the chart so it's not like it's going to sell any? more copies. Yes her tour is doing well but that's pretty much all she has going at this point. She was a lot more successful last era and if she keeps making more and more horrible music and making the public feel alienated she's not going to last for very much longer.
